Jungle ATV Ride to Xunantunich is a half day tour offering an extreme, off the beaten path way to explore our local Flora & Fauna with an extraordinary trip to one of Belize’s most popular Maya Sites – Xunantunich.
Starts: 9:00AM Ends: 12:00PM (morning session)
Starts: 1:00AM Ends: 4:00PM (Afternoon session)
Getting There: Your adventure begins as you’re picked up from your hotel in San Ignacio and embark on a short 15 – 20 minutes drive to the ATV park near the western village of San Jose Succotz in Cayo. A short off-road drive off the main highway leads us to the parking site where the real adventure begins.
The Tour: At the site, the professional and friendly staff will explain the do’s and don’ts with full detailed explanation of how to operate the equipment. You will then embark on an adventurous jungle trail en route to the popular Xunantunich Maya Site. Enjoy the lush Flora & Fauna while you rough it up in the muddy trails which will be sure to bring out that dormant inner child in you.
Upon arriving in Succutz Village, you’ll board a hand-cranked ferry which will take you across the Mopan River. From here, it’s a short ride uphill until you reach the Maya Site’s parking lot where you will check-in.
Your guide will then proceed to give you a tour of this once great Mayan city. You’ll be amazed at how impressive the Temple of El Castillo (the main temple) actually is at a remarkable 120 feet in height. Pay close attention to the history of this once royal center of ancient civilization as your guide walks you through the site. Feel free to climb to the top of El Castillo if you’re not afraid of heights. There you’ll have a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the surroundings which encompasses part of Guatemala, Benque Viejo Town, and San Jose Succotz among other areas.
Be careful coming down from the pyramid as you make your way over to the ancient ball court. Imagine the excitement happening in real time as your guide paints a vivid picture of how the popular Mayan game of Pok-ta-pok was played. On site you may get to see spider monkeys and, depending on the time of the year, even howler monkeys. An on-site museum will give you an overall idea of this ancient city’s actual size.
Departure: After a fun-filled time at Xunantunich, you’ll head back to the site’s parking lot where you will again board your ATV’s and head down and across the ferry, and back onto the ATV park where you started your journey. Please be reminded that this tour does not include lunches since it is only a half day tour. The lunch option is available at US$7.50 pp inclusive of beverages and snacks.
