Starting March 11, 2017, Southwest Airlines will begin operating non-stop weekly flights from Denver’s International Airport (DIA) to the Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City (BZE), Belize. As part of their expansion into the growing Caribbean market, Southwest has plans to operate the new Denver-Belize route until April 22, 2017, the busiest travel period for Denver-area residents to vacation in Belize.
The new non-stop flight between Denver and Belize is in response to growing demand from travelers who want to enjoy the tropical islands, balmy temperatures, and gorgeous mainland teeming with exotic wildlife. The Southwest Airlines route is the first of its kind to offer non-stop service between Denver and Belize but more than 13,000 passengers traveled to the Central America in 2016, a 50% increase from just three years ago. Belize is the only country in the region where English is the official language. The local currency (Belize dollar) is permanently pegged to the U.S. dollar at 2:1, and American dollars are accepted everywhere.
Denver-Belize service will be offered every Saturday with flights departing at 10:30 AM local time and arriving in Belize at 2:50 PM local time (Belize is in the same time zone as Denver but does not observe daylight savings time) using a Boeing 737 aircraft that can seat up to 143 passengers. The new Southwest flight will join existing service to Belize by the company from Houston’s Hobby Airport (HOU) and a new route from Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood, Florida (FLA) Airport scheduled to begin on June 4, 2017.
