On Friday June, 23rd, 2017 I took a spontaneous trip upon last minute to check out the San Pedro Lobster festival for the first time ever. I Spent the Friday and Saturday there. The video attached below shows my journey from San Ignacio to San Pedro. It doesn’t go into much details as to what the San Pedro Lobster Fest is or all the activities, but I’ve written most of the details in this blog. I hope you find it insightful.
The San Pedro Lobster Festival 2017
This article is specifically about the San Pedro Lobster Fest although Lobster Fest is the celebration of the opening of the Lobster Season in Belize and is celebrated not only in San Pedro but in Caye Caulker and Placencia as well.
What is the San Pedro Lobster Fest?
The San Pedro Lobster Fest is an event held in San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye, Belize and developed by the San Pedro Business Association to celebrate the opening of the Lobster season in Belize. The event was introduced for the first time in 2007 and this year they’re celebrating the 11th annual San Pedro Lobster Festival.
The festival has since, grown to become a 10-days event starting, this year, from Thursday the 15th of June to Sunday the 24th of June with daily night time and daytime activities at various different participating businesses such as bars, bistros, cafes, etc.
There is a lobster fest official page where you can catch the latest updates of past and upcoming festivals as well as a calendar of events and the announcement of the winner of the grand prize raffle. Check out the official Lobster Fest page here.
Why should you attend?
With such a vast array of delectable lobster-based recipes to please your taste buds, the answer is; why not! The town’s people of San Pedro have come a long way in perfecting the art of lobster cooking and have gotten very creative with their recipes. Choose from Grilled Lobster, Lobster Tacos, Lobster Pizza, Lobster kebab, Lobster Ceviche, ugh… the list goes on and on. One thing’s for sure, you will fall in love with lobster and sea food in general after you’re tasted the heavenly cuisine at this festival. You will also leave with a few added pounds but trust me, it would be all worth it.
What to expect at the San Pedro Lobster Festival?
San Pedro is known for its vibrant island nightlife where every night offers some entertainment for your delight. During Lobster Fest week, there are a series of events specifically designed by the San Pedro Business Association in what they call the Lobster Crawl.
The apex of this festival, however; is the block party on the last Saturday of the event (Saturday 23rd June, 2017). The block party takes place at Central Park with special performances by local artists, and bands (most noteworthy is the talented Pannerifix Steel Band), various food and beverage booths, night clubs, and lots of partying among locals and visitors.
The Lobster Crawl Passport
If you’re planning on an extended visit to the island, then it’s definitely worth “applying” for your Lobster Crawl “Passport”. This can be attained at any of the participating venues or the San Pedro town council. Each page of the Lobster crawl passport has a corresponding night time or daytime event where you are expected to get stamped at each participating venue’s event. Each stamp earns you a raffle ticket to the grand prize.
The grand prize raffle drawing takes place during the block party on Central Park on the last Saturday of the event. The winner is awarded a free vacation package for 2 to attend the San Pedro Lobster Festival the following year (2018), all expenses included – dinners, bar tabs, golf cart rentals, tours, hotel stays, local airfare, massages, and much more!
Worried you won’t be present for the block party? Not to worry, this is one raffle prize you don’t have to be present to win. If you’ve managed to collect a few stamps leading up to the raffle date and are heading off the island before the drawing date, be sure to drop off your Lobster Crawl Passport at the SEAduced office on Tarpon St. they will make sure your tickets make it into the raffle. If you’re the lucky winner, you will be notified via email.
The winner of this year’s grand raffle prize is: Kirsten Bentley. Congrats to her! She has a all-paid vacation to San Pedro’s Lobster Fest 2018. Woohoo!
